Often we are reminded to take time to "stop and smell the flowers," savor the pleasant aroma and enjoy the natural wonders around us. It can be said that taking time from a busy schedule can improve one's mood, but there is a stronger truth in that old saying, for certain floral and herbal scents can prove beneficial to the body and soul. This is the basis for aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is commonly defined by the use of essential oils (liquid material extracted from various plants) and other compounds for the improvement of mood and health. French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé is credited with coining the term aromatherapy in the early twentieth century, his interest in this field happening literally by accident. While at work in his perfume factory, Gattefossé's arm caught fire, and he quickly doused the flame in the first vat of liquid he could find, lavender oil. It was when the burn healed quickly without scarring did he realize the potential healing properties of various plants and herbs.
Aromatherapy has since come to play an integral role in alternative and holistic medicine, with practitioners employing aromatherapy for relief from various ailments - from headaches to insomnia, skin care and mood enhancement. While aromatherapy is most commonly associated with inhalation techniques, such as the burning of incense or oils, other commons applications include absorption through the skin (with lotions and gels) and absorption through the mucous membrances (with oral rinses). Common plants and herbs used in aromatherapy include:
Lavender - used for enhancing relaxation and counteracting insomnia
Green Tea - rich in antioxidants, used for pain relief
Ginseng - used for improvement of memory
Lemongrass - used for relief from stress
Vanilla - used for relief from stress and tension
